Roland Ray Manuel, 76, a resident of Lake Charles, passed from this life on July 28, 2020, in the comfort of his home.

Ray, as he was known to all who loved him, Poppy to his grandchildren, lived his life for his family.
He was a kind and compassionate person who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Ray was an attentive husband and father, grandfather, and uncle. He would show his love by giving big hugs and displaying the I love you symbol in sign language. Poppy had a playful spirit and a beautiful sense of humor and was even a bit of a smartass for fun. He gave great advice and always had a way of simplifying seemingly complex circumstances. He played the guitar, loved to sing and tell Cajun jokes. Ray was a creative individual and artist including airbrushing and could fix anything with coat hanger wire. Ray was an ingenuitive individual and found enjoyment with the success of repairing broken mechanics no matter the scale. He enjoyed simple things like beer, rice and gravy, cornbread with milk and Steen’s syrup, his mother’s recipe for Lemon icebox pie and lemon heads. But it was torture for him to watch someone eat lemons. Ray will always be remembered for his faith in God and was always thankful for life, love, and family.

Mr. Manuel is preceded in death by his parents, Ortear and Anita Fruge Manuel and brothers, Robert Manuel and J.D. Manuel.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 53 years, Deretta “ Dee” Bergeron Manuel; three children, Monica Marie Manuel Vincent and husband Damon, Tammy Lynn Manuel White and husband Christopher, and Kyle Joseph Manuel and wife Chrissie, grandchildren: Jason Bradley, Katelyn Vincent, Coryn Vincent, Cloe Vincent, Owen Manuel, and Leila Manuel; sister, Carol Harrison, and brother, Larry Manuel.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 31, 2020 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM in the chapel of Lakeside Funeral Home. A rosary will be prayed at 6:30 PM. Visitation will continue on Saturday, August 1, 2020 from 8:00 AM until departure for the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. Rev. Nathan Long is to officiate. Private Burial will be held at a later date.

The family would appreciate donations be made to the Christus Hospice Foundation in Mr. Manuel’s memory.

The family respectfully request that all guest wear mask and practice social distancing.

My sincere condolences to Ray's family. Ray and I spent a lot of time together on the road all over the country driving lease cars and vans from point a to point b. We had a lot of time to talk sometimes serious sometimes not but the one thing I remember the most is how much he loved his family. I remember one time Ray forgot his cell phone on a overnight trip, Ray liked to stay in constant contact with Dee. I knew how he loved Dee, so I offered him my phone. Things worked out OK, as he was able to use the hotel phone to tell Dee goodnight. There a lot of trivial stories I could recall but I just wanted to say I always enjoyed Ray's company on the road trips and I will surely miss him.
