Joseph R. “Spike” Borel Jr., 85, died on Wednesday, July 8, 2020. Spike was born on March 8, 1935, in Lake Charles, LA. He attended Landry Memorial High School. He was a telecom construction supervisor, installing fiber optic and telephone cable for Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida, where he retired after 30 years. In 1979 he was featured in the National Geographic Magazine for his work at Disney. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for Our Lady Queen of Heaven Parish.

Spike was known for his lack of patience, not holding back his opinion, and a knack for telling it like it is. He always told you the truth, even if you didn't want to hear it.

He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Mary Ann Kohnke-Borel, five children; Rachelle Borel (Joe Leist), Louisville, KY, Kim Borel Crestwood KY, Cindy Borel, Oxford, GA, Troy Borel, and Mark Borel, Orlando FL; daughter-in-law, Jill Borel, Clarkston, MI; stepson Buddy Kohnke, Lake Charles; stepdaughter, Lisa Ange of Lake Charles; brother, Dan Borel Lake Charles; sisters, Mary Ann Guidry, Lake Charles and Jane Keziah of South Carolina, fifteen grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Anna Faye and Joseph Borel Sr.; first wife, Donnis Borel, and son Boyd Borel.

The family wishes to express special thanks to Brighton Bridge Hospice for their kind and devoted
care, especially Melinda, Vicki, June, and Bethany.

The family will receive friends on Monday, July 13, 2020, from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM in the chapel of Lakeside Funeral Home. A rosary will be prayed at 5:30 PM. A Memorial Service will follow the rosary at 6:00 PM in the chapel of Lakeside Funeral Home in Lake Charles, LA.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Spike's name, to St. Jude's Children’s Research
Hospital or a charity of your choice.

To Mary Ann and families of you and Spike. Gail, Lisa and I, extend our deepest sympathies to all of you on the passing of Spike. We first met him when I began my telephone service career with WDW in January of 1988. He sure had some good times ribbing this Yankee transplant from New England but we soon became fast friends with him and Donnis. So enjoyed their company and friendship for many years. Spike was a person who would do anything to help a friend out when they needed it. All of you will be in our prayers and we certainly are sad to say so long to Spike until we all meet again.

Love and prayers,

John, Gail and Lisa Coussoule

To the family of Spike. Spike and I worked for Disney from 1972 until he retired. We car pooled for many years and I can say that Spike was one of a kind and that I will always remember him and the good times we had. I have kept in touch with him every since we both retired. I called him and he called me. May God bless all of the family and know that I have prayed for all of you and, I have prayed with him. The last time I talked to him we had prayer together and shed tears together. May God always be with all of the family. Love David & Sue Campbell
