Obituary for Jerrid Paige Smeal

Jerrid “Captain Dutch” Smeal - a.k.a. Dar’s Cappy- passed peacefully and surrounded by loved ones in his home in Lake Charles. LA on January 16, 2020 at the age of 81.

Dutch is survived by his wife Darlene, brother Bruce, children Cory and Peter, and teeming scores of adoring friends and fans whom he utterly charmed over the last eight decades. He is preceded in death by his much beloved mother Cora “Pete” and sister Becky.

Captain Dutch was born on December 3rd in Kane, PA. Over the years he traveled to many places and saw a good portion of the world but spent most of his life in the Gulf states -most recently Lake Charles for twenty years working on the water he loved.

“Cappy”, as most locals knew him, earned the nickname for his 55 years as a skilled and often decorated captain who in his time drove everything from drilling platforms to his favorite kayak. If it floated, he could move it. He is well remembered by his colleagues for his devotion to his vocation; by his employees for his exacting standards; by his family for his wit and endless advice delivered as patented “Dutch-isms”, by every new person he met for his warmth and gift for immediate connection and by hordes of waitresses around the world for his ability to charm the red off a rooster.

In his life he was well liked, extraordinarily loved and will be profoundly missed.

A celebration of his life is planned for a later date and will be announced separately.

In the meantime, all are welcome to send thoughts, wishes and remembrances to his Facebook page: www.facebook.com/dutchsmeal.
